Changing Suspension Springs

Below, we'll explain how to safely and correctly replace your vehicle's suspension springs. It's important to have the right tool, as this will make the job easier and more efficient.

1. Preparation:
  • Park the vehicle on a level, secure surface.
  • Secure the vehicle with chocks on the rear wheels (if working on the front) or the front wheels (if working on the rear).
  • Raise the vehicle with a hydraulic jack and secure it with safety stands.

2. Removal:

  • Remove the wheel on the side where you will be replacing the spring.
  • Disconnect the components holding the shock absorber and spring, such as the sway bar links and brake lines.
  • If necessary, loosen the upper and lower shock absorber bolts.
  • Use a spring compressor to compress the spring, making sure it is securely attached.
  • Remove the spring carefully, keeping in mind that it is compressed and can suddenly release energy.

3. Installation:

  • Place the new spring in position, ensuring it fits properly into the upper and lower mounts.
  • If necessary, compress the spring with a compressor to facilitate installation.
  • Secure the spring to any components that hold it, such as the tie rods and brake lines.
  • Tighten the upper and lower shock bolts to the torque specified in the vehicle owner's manual.

4. Finishing:
  • Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  • Remove the wheel chocks.
  • Tighten the wheel nuts to the appropriate torque.
  • Perform a test drive to verify proper suspension function.

Recommendations:

  • Use proper tools and follow safety procedures to avoid injury.
  • It's recommended to replace springs in pairs (both front or both rear) to maintain vehicle balance.

In conclusion, changing your vehicle's springs is essential to keep your vehicle in good condition and prevent wear on other parts that could cause an accident. Checking certain parts of your vehicle every certain mileage is important for productive car maintenance.
